Nanomedicine has profoundly revolutionized the therapeutic strategies used for neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Neural regeneration as a key step in developmental processes and cancer is tightly regulated by multiple mechanisms. Understanding these mechanisms allows us to utilize nanomedicine approaches to design therapeutic or diagnostic nanoparticles (NPs) for targeted delivery of the drugs. Multifunctional NPs can cross the central nervous system (CNS) barriers and modulate the immunological milieu to further enhance regenerative capacity of neurons in neurodegenerative diseases or to inhibit cancer progression by blocking tumor innervation. This chapter provides an overview on current application of NPs in neurodegenerative diseases and the emerging concept of nerve-dependence in cancer.
