Shigella spp. are genomically and immunologically diverse, specialized pathovars of Escherichia coli that are taxonomically separated owing to their comparatively high disease burden and distinctive genomic subtypes and genetic features. Pathogenicity islands on their 4.3–4.9Mbp genome and their large (>126kbp) invasion plasssmid (pINV),1 which they share with enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC, see the second Section), encode the machinery required to invade colonic epithelial cells and manifest the severe diarrheal disease shigellosis (previously known as bacillary dysentery).
