Doherty Institute announces Computational Sciences Initiative (CSI)

The Doherty Institute is proud to announce the launch of a ground-breaking new initiative that aims to transform understanding of infection and immunity. 

The Computational Sciences Initiative (CSI) will form and build collaborations between computational scientists and infection and immunity specialists across the Doherty Institute in a bid to maximise discoveries from complex data sets.

University of Melbourne’s Dr Jenny Anderson, CSI Project Manager at the Doherty Institute, said the Initiative will ultimately lead to improved health outcomes for the public. 

“By driving collaborations between computational scientists and infection and immunity specialists, this exciting initiative will enhance the analysis of big data sets,” Dr Anderson said. 

“This will drive new discoveries, and improve our ability to diagnose, treat and prevent infectious diseases, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes.”

Operating across three overlapping arms (Discovery Research, Clinical and Health Systems, and Public Health), the CSI will connect Doherty Institute specialists with each other to assist with project design, grant applications, data management, data analyses, interpretation and presentation.

University of Melbourne’s Priyanka Pillai, Health Data Specialist at the Doherty Institute, said the last two years showed the impact of data to drive public health response.

“We need to invest in people, skills, and infrastructure to leverage the power of infectious diseases data,” Ms Pillai said.

The CSI was generously funded by the J & M Wright Foundation.
