Infectious diseases physician Professor Karin Leder holds positions as Head of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, and as Director of Travel Medicine and Immigrant Health Services, VIDS, Royal Melbourne Hospital. In this seminar, she will speak about The Rise project: assessing environmental and human health impacts of a water-sanitation intervention in urban informal settlements.

Informal settlements (slums) account for much urban growth, exacerbating the linked challenges of sanitation, water provision, and public health. This presentation will describe a project which plans to use an alternative, water-sensitive approach to these challenges, and an associated research program that will be performed in 12 communities in Makassar, Indonesia and 12 in Suva, Fiji. The research, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust, involves a parallel-cluster randomised controlled trial, with monitoring of the effects on pathogens, microbial communities (microbiome) and genetic markers of antimicrobial resistance in environmental and human faecal samples taken from study communities.
