Roy Robins-Browne qualified in medicine in South Africa and joined the (then) Department of Microbiology at the University of Melbourne as an Associate Professor in 1982 He became a Professor in 1996, and was Head/Deputy Head of the Department from 1998-2013. He is also co-leader of the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Group at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.
Roy's research is mainly focused on the pathogenesis of bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract, with a focus on E. coli. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 refereed papers on this and other topics concerning bacterial pathogens. Apart from his research, Roy has played a central role in the coordination of microbiology and immunology teaching for medical students in three different curricula. His Doherty seminar will describe the work of his research team on the search for agents that could be used as adjuncts or alternatives to traditional antimicrobials.
