At this seminar, Royal Children's Hospital Paediatrician and Adoloscent Medicine Specialist, Associate Professor Michelle Telfer will present on Gender dysphoria in children and adolescents: an update on clinical practice, research and advocacy from the RCH.
The Royal Children’s Hospital has seen year-on-year increases in referrals for children and adolescents seeking to access to trans-medical treatments. Demand has risen exponentially from 18 referrals in 2012 to 250 referrals in 2017, and is thought to be as a result of increasing visibility and acceptance of gender diversity in the wider community. This seminar will provide an update on these issues and will also examine areas for future research and medicolegal advocacy to improve the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse children.
Associate Professor Michelle Telfer is a Paediatrician and Adolescent Medicine Specialist at the RCH. Michelle played a major role in successfully advocating for legal reforms to access treatment. In 2015, the RCH Gender Service was awarded the Minister for Mental Health’s Award for excellence in consumer leadership and advocacy at the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
