In this presentation Dr Rory Bowden from the University of Oxford will describe the development of workflows to enable large-scale virus genomics of clinical samples for diagnostics and big-data analyses, with a particular application in the evaluation and management of HIV infections. He will discuss the wide applicability of sequence enrichment-based techniques in the detection and evaluation of pathogen sequences.
Dr Bowden is broadly interested in the application of genomics, especially high-throughput techniques in conjunction with next-generation DNA sequencing, to problems in medicine and biology. He has scientific involvements in fields as diverse as: microbial and viral genomics, induced pluripotent stem cells, single-cell genomics and biology, and nanopore sequencing. Rory’s work at the University of Oxford is concerned with generally enabling Oxford researchers in their genomics research by leading in the strategic introduction of new platforms and their associated methods, by developing new initiatives and in the leadership of numerous genomics projects. He has a special interest in extending the reach of modern sequencing into tropical medicine. Rory has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Adelaide and a PhD from Cambridge, and received post-doctoral training at Oxford and at the MRC Virology Unit in Glasgow.
