ARC Discovery grant success for Doherty researchers

Scientists at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) have secured more than $3.5 million in funding for their research projects.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) granted funding of over $221 million in total for 478 new projects as part of the ARC Discovery Projects scheme, which aims to support individual researchers and research teams to innovate and further knowledge in various fields of science.

Doherty Institute Director Professor Sharon Lewin said the strong representation of Doherty Institute researchers in the funding allocation speaks to the quality of discovery research being done at the Institute.

“The award of a Discovery Grant that includes five laboratory heads at the Doherty Institute is a testament to the outstanding quality of our work in immunology and the strength of our research teams,” Professor Lewin said.

“Securing this funding for our teams is a huge achievement and will significantly help to advance our understanding in these important fields.”

Discovery Projects is a flagship scheme for fundamental research and the largest scheme under the ARC National Competitive Grants Program.

It provides funding of between $30,000 and $500,000 each year for up to 5 consecutive years that can be used to support research associates or assistants and technicians, access to research and infrastructure facilities, technical workshop services, essential field research, equipment and consumables, and the publication and dissemination of findings.
