Cowie Group is Melbourne Research Team of the Year!

Associate Professor Ben Cowie along with his dedicated and talented hepatitis research team have been named the Melbourne Research Team of the Year at the Melbourne Health Celebrating Excellence Awards.

The awards celebrate Melbourne Health individual staff and teams excelling in their field and improving outcomes for patients and consumers.

Associate Professor Cowie, who is also Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Viral Hepatitis, and his team his team were recognised for their epidemiological research and public health programs.

Through translation of research into policy and programmes in Victoria, nationally and overseas, the team’s work is having significant impact on public health approaches and patient care across the globe.

“Our team is really honoured to receive this award. We feel very grateful, especially when we work among so many others undertaking such high quality and diverse research,” Associate Professor Cowie said.

“We are fortunate to work in an institution that seeks to be first in care, research and learning – and that recognises the value of translational public health research in improving health globally through the prevention, treatment and cure of infectious diseases.”

Associate Professor Cowie said the team works very closely, and with collaborators within Melbourne Health and from around the world, on a range of different projects which keeps the work interesting and challenging.

“This award recognises the work of so many others beyond our own group and we gratefully acknowledge our colleagues at the Doherty, across Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne,” he said.

“Our research agenda is intended to support the development of healthy public policy and programmes to help prevent the unacceptable burden of viral hepatitis here in Australia and around the world. We acknowledge the inspiration, support and ongoing guidance of people living with viral hepatitis and their communities in helping define, and being active partners in our research and its translation.”
