Biomedical students at the Doherty Institute receive academic awards for excellence

Several students from the University of Melbourne ’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology (DMI) at the Doherty Institute have been recognised among the highest performing students at the 2023 School of Biomedical Sciences Academic Awards.  

The annual award ceremony, which was hosted this year by University of Melbourne Head of School Professor Jenny Wilkinson-Berka and featured Head of Microbiology and Immunology at the Doherty Institute Professor Andrew Brooks, celebrates excellence in the Biomedical Science undergraduate, majors, honours streams and subjects. 

 

The following awards were presented to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s students at the Doherty Institute: 

  • Jia Wei Tang - DMI 2nd year Microbiology prize (B-BMED) 

  • Mia Peterson - Nancy Millis Prize in Microbiology and Immunology 

  • Tyarne Stanley - DMI 3rd Year Immunology Prize 

  • Edith Spiers - DMI 3rd Year Microbiology Prize 

  • Paris Matthews - E.S.J. King Prize 

  • Daniel Murray - Exhibition Prize in Microbiology and Immunology 

  • Emily McLean - Ian Holmes Medal for Virology 

  • Bridget Fisher - Roy and Iris Simmons Award 
     

University of Melbourne PhD Candidate in the Lewin Laboratory at the Doherty Institute, Bridget Fisher, said she was honoured to receive the award. 

“Receiving the Roy and Iris Simmons Award and being recognised on the 2022 Dean's Honours List this year validates my academic achievements during what was a challenging year of hands-on learning,” Ms Fisher said.  

“The monetary donation entrusted to me will greatly enhance the progression of my PhD, which focuses on the development of mRNA-encapsulating lipid nanoparticles as potent, HIV-specific latency reversing agents, in the hope that an HIV cure will become a reality in our lifetimes.”
