Evidence-based solutions for antimicrobial stewardship
Improving the use of antimicrobial drugs in hospitals and other healthcare settings is a key priority of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy. As antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is consolidated as a key criterion in hospital accreditation, hospitals are focused on implementing effective AMS systems.
Guidance MS, a solution for AMS developed by the Guidance Group (Royal Melbourne Hospital) based at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, has been implemented at more than 60 hospitals in Australia. Evaluations at individual sites have found benefits such as:
- improved use of antimicrobials;
- improved patient outcomes;
- improved susceptibility patterns among bacterial isolates; and
- lower drug acquisition costs
In MJA Insight, Arjun Rajkhowa discusses a recent Australian study published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy that demonstrates the effectiveness of Guidance MS as a centrally-deployed solution implemented across multiple sites operating coordinated AMS programs.
