Funding announced for staph clinical trials and infections in Indigenous communities
Today, Minister for Health, The Hon Greg Hunt announced new grant funding across a range of Australia’s world-class research institutes, including $333,709 for Associate Professor Steven Tong at the Peter Doherty Institute. His research project ‘Optimising interventions for Staphylococcus aureus and skin infections’ will conduct clinical trials to optimise the management of staphylococcal bloodstream infections. Using genomics and mathematical modelling his research will also seek to understand and reduce the burden of skin infections in Indigenous communities.
Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections are major causes of illness and death, particularly in Indigenous Australians. These include invasive bloodstream infections and skin infections that lead to chronic kidney and heart disease.
