Professor Sharon Lewin awarded Woman of Style Science Award
Doherty Institute Director, Professor Sharon Lewin has been awarded the prestigious In Style Magazine Women of Style Science Award at a gala event in Sydney.
Australia’s leading awards in recognising the achievements of women, the Women of Style awards honour 27 women across nine categories for the impressive work they are doing in their field.
Professor Lewin was nominated for her international reputation as a leading researcher and clinician, who is striving to find a cure for HIV through innovative science. She joined other nominees NASA geologist and astrobiologist, Dr Abigail Allwood, and University of New South Wales marine ecologist, Professor Emma Johnson.
Professor Lewin said it was a great surprise to win the award and an incredible experience to be in the room filled with so many inspirational women.
“There was such an eclectic mix at the awards ceremony, from cooking royalty, Margaret Fulton to the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop,” she said.
“I’m honoured to have been able to accept the award and put science, and specifically women in science, in the spotlight.”
Now in its ninth year, the Women of Style Awards were established to recognise Australian Women who are innovators and leaders, have made a significant impact in their field, and are actively involved in the community, operating with integrity and compassion.
