You never forget the flu: What you need to know about this year’s flu season
You never forget the flu. It can hit quickly and last for a few weeks. For the vulnerable, like children, the elderly and people with a chronic condition or weakened immune system, the flu can have serious and devastating outcomes.
To provide insight into this year’s flu season, and the importance of vaccination and why you need to get it annually, the Doherty Insitute and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services co-hosted a public lecture.
The debilitating effects of influenza were also illustrated by 22-year-old Kiara Perin who after contracting the virus last year, ended up in intensive care for over a week.
Watch below to hear from Dr Angie Bone, Victorian Acting Chief Health Officer; Professor Kanta Subbarao, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza at the Doherty Institute; Kiara Perin and Professor Lorena Brown an influenza virologist at the Doherty Institute.
