Elucidating metagenomic markers of prolonged diarrhoea in returned travellers
Travellers' diarrhoea is common, and gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating etc.) can last months. We are recruiting participants who develop gastrointestinal symptoms during or shortly after international travel and whose symptoms last more than two weeks. We will survey participants over six months to describe the duration and impact of symptoms. Faecal specimens (poo) will be tested using whole genome metagenomic sequencing to analyse genetic material (DNA) of bacteria and protozoa (bugs). We will compare participants with symptoms to healthy controls. We hope to identify markers of prolonged and severe disease to improve our understanding of this illness.
