The Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory and Royal Melbourne Hospital Microboilogy Department have been the leading COVID-19 diagnostics and reference laboratory in Victoria and Australia. In late January, our scientists were the first to grow the virus in the laboratory outside of China and the first to share it with public health laboratories globally. VIDRL also identified the first case in Australia.
