Simon is a National Health and Medical Research Council fellow in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Doherty Institute. He is based at the UNFPA Asia Pacific Office in Bangkok, Thailand.

He is the lead of the Indigenous Health cross-cutting discipline at the Doherty Institute and produced the Indigenous research report. He also chairs the annual Indigenous Health research seminar. Simon led a four-year community-based trial that successfully tripled sexually transmitted infection testing which identified double the number of asymptomatic infections among young Aboriginal people living in small towns. This enabled the Aboriginal Medical Services to provide treatment early and prevent poor reproductive health outcomes.

  • Key Achievements
    • In 2022, Simon won the NHMRC Sandra Eades Investigator Grant Award for the highest ranked applicant. Simon has received over AUD$6 million in competitive funding; $3 million as lead investigator and held externally funded fellowships since receiving his PhD in 2014. Simon spent his three-year postdoctoral period overseas including: 12-months as a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow at the PRIDE Health Research Consortium in New York City, two-years as a NHMRC early career fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and six-months as an Endeavour fellow at the First Nations Health Authority in Vancouver.
