Professor Justin Denholm is the Medical Director of the Victorian Tuberculosis Program. Justin is an infectious diseases physician and ethicist, and is actively involved in clinical and public health research and supervision relating to a range of infectious diseases. He is a Senior Staff Specialist at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Melbourne. He is also Chair of the Ethics Advisory Group of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and the Deputy Chair of the National Tuberculosis Advisory Committee.

  • Key Achievements
    • Justin has a wide range of expertise and experience relating to tuberculosis, and has published research around clinical management, epidemiology, pathogen genomics, diagnostics and multi-drug resistance. He is involved in clinical research programs into optimal care for a variety of infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and Staphylococcus aureus, and provides support for training and conduct of operational research programs globally. Justin also has an active research program in ethical issues related to infectious diseases in society, including public health policy, screening programs and isolation. He is a current NHMRC Investigator Fellow.

    • Victorian Tuberculosis Program Group

      Justin’s group specialises tuberculosis (TB) with an emphasis on latent TB and conducts activities ranging from expansion of theoretical foundations for understanding latency and risk associated with TB infection to socio-cultural engagement with communities at high risk for TB, and development of strategic public health policies towards TB elimination. The group includes researchers with expertise in a range of methodologies, including clinical research, epidemiology, mathematical modelling, ethics and interventional  research.
