Barbara contributes to the development of clinical research activities within the Doherty Institute, and work on projects examining a range of acute and chronic viral as well as bacterial diseases caused by agents including HIV, Hepatitis B, TB, Group A staph and intestinal microbiota. She provides support to Doherty clinical researchers in respect to:
- Study protocol and PICF development
- Ethics/governance submissions within the University and across multiple institutions, including hospitals
- Post approval regulatory documentation support required by ICH GCP
- Provide monitoring activities
- Electronic clinical research database design via REDCap

Barbara majored in Biochemistry and graduated with a BSc(Hons) MSc from Monash University. After graduating, Barbara went on to work in the field of male infertility at both the Centre for Early Human Development (Queen Victoria Hospital) and Department of Anatomy, Monash University. In 1996, Barbara changed fields and worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator in Oncology and Haematology clinical trials. In 2001, she set up the Oncology/Haematology Clinical Research Unit at Cabrini Health and became the inaugural manager of the unit from 2005 to 2015.
Currently Barbara is a member of the University of Melbourne Clinical Trials Policy Worrking group as well as a member of the newly formed MACH Infectious Diseases Executive Committee.

Lewin Group
The focus of the Lewin group is to understand why HIV infection persists on antiretroviral therapy and to develop new strategies to eliminate latency. The lab also researches factors that drive liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B virus co-infection. The lab is also actively involved in COVID in relation to pathogenesis, the use of primary tissue models, and developing therapeutics using gene editing strategies.
