Professor Fazakerley studied Botany and Zoology for his BSc (Hons) and has an MBA and a PhD. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal Society of Biology. His career has included positions at St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London, the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla California, the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge and The Royal School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh where he was Chair of Virology in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine. In his most recent post, before moving to Melbourne, he was Director of the UK National Virology Institute, The Pirbright Institute.

John is an internationally respected research scientist and science manager. He has expertise in leading, building, transforming and managing research, teaching and engagement within universities and research institutes across biosciences, medicine and veterinary medicine. John has appointments to national and international committees including review panels, editorial boards, and editorships and coordinator of large international research consortia. He is an international expert on biocontainment and viruses of high medical or socioeconomic consequence and on the pathogenesis of arthropod-borne viruses. He has made major research contributions in understanding arbovirus encephalitis and arbovirus persistence in mammalian systems and the response to these viruses of arthropod cells and mosquitoes.

Fazakerley Group
The Fazakerley lab main interest is in the pathogenesis of infections with RNA viruses, in particular arboviruses and virus infections of the central nervous system. Our main focus is to understand arbovirus encephalitis and arbovirus persistence in mammalian systems and the response to these viruses of arthropod cells and mosquitoes.
